Marvin and Gemma’s After Wedding Party

The Iron Bar was asked by Gemma & Marvin to provide a bar service for their after-wedding Party at their home just outside Newport, Shropshire. Gemma and Marvin had already been married a few weeks before in Lake Como.

From our first discussion with Gemma, she determined that the bar would be a free or open bar. Initially, we were asked to provide a pre-paid bar where they would pay for all of the drinks upfront. We would provide the bar, staff, and service for the event.

The only problem with pre-paid bars for the client is that they can be costly. After all, the bar must ensure that all of its costs are covered and that it will make a profit. Due to the number of guests invited to the Party the total cost was over £10000.

Dry Bar Hire Option

We gave Gemma the option of a Dry Hire Bar. We would provide the staff and bar, and they would supply the alcohol and other drinks.

This was the option they eventually decided on. After this, several lengthy emails and phone calls regarding drinks required and drink choices followed.

Gemma and Marvin decided that they wanted to serve Peroni Lager on Draught. Also, an IPA was another choice on draught. This was chosen from Salopian Breweries Black range and was a beautiful grapefruit-flavoured IPA called Auric.

Set-Up Day

We set the bar up on Friday morning and looked on in awe at the sheer amount of drinks Gemma had bought for the Party. The spirits alone rivalled what the Iron Bar would stock on a cash bar. And we have over 70 different spirits to choose from. We also had three 50-litre kegs of Peroni, three 30-litre kegs of Auric, and lots of bottled beers, cider, and gallons of wine and Champagne.

The Day of the Happily Ever After Party

We started on Saturday afternoon with a full complement of staff serving a champagne reception to the guests as they were bussed into the venue. We also helped the Caterer’s to serve the Canapes.

The wedding party was held in a 4 hat tipi at the couple’s home next to a large lake. There was plenty of room for the guests to mingle and get in the party spirit.

After the reception drinks were served, the bar opened. We were soon very busy serving various drinks and the couple’s signature cocktails: Aperol Spritz for Gemma and a Negroni for Marvin (it is definitely an acquired taste).

Food and Entertainment

As this was an October wedding party, it soon dropped dark, and the guests were fed by Adam Purnell (the Shropshire Lad). Ella Coleman, the singer, was replaced by the first of 2 DJs playing that evening and the remainder of the 250 guests arrived. Cue problem, one of our bar staff, had to leave urgently, so we packed him off, rolled up our sleeves, and 4 of us got stuck in serving all the guests and keeping a steady turnaround of clean glassware to the bar. Not an easy task with so many people, but we kept calm and carried on!

Before we knew it, it was time for the fireworks and the next DJ (one of my all-time favourite DJs), Graeme Park from the Hacienda and Cream Nightclubs. An old friend of Marvin’s had agreed to DJ the rest of the night.

The Party continued on till 1am, and the beer held out until the last moment before we had emptied all of the kegged beer. That is not bad, considering there were almost 430 pints of beer.

The After Party started at 1am and went on long into the early hours of the morning. Fortunately, we were all tucked up in bed by 2am. We thoroughly enjoyed a busy full-on wedding party. We wish Gemma and Marvin all the best for their future together.
